Among the dead was a three-year-old baby.

Their bodies were all taken to Gweru Hospital mortuary.

The officer commanding police in the Midlands province Assistant Commissioner Learn Ncube confirmed the accident and the deaths.

Ncube said the seven were coming from a family function in Mberengwa driving in a Toyota Corrolla when the driver attempted to overtake another vehicle in front of the oncoming bus.

When he attempted to avoid a head-on collision, the car was then sideswiped and it overturned killing all its occupants on the spot.

Ncube also said the Corolla appeared to have been speeding and urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the country’s roads and to also avoid speeding.

He said names of the deceased were being withheld until their next of kin had been informed.
