Students who spoke to Southern Eye expressed disgust over the issue and accused the Nust administration of sabotage.

The students claimed that they reported the electricity issue to the acting dean of students Stylish Magida, who was reluctant to entertain their query.

“The situation is unbearable. We are not able to read at night yet exams start in two weeks’ time. Our perishable food stuffs have all gone bad, which is another huge loss to us because we don’t have stable income since we are only students,” one student said.

“What Nust is doing is not fair. Why are they failing to attend to the fault yet we paid money on time? This is just negligence and it means someone is sleeping on duty.

“They just switch on the generator for two hours, but really, what can you do within two hours? Sometimes they switch it on during lectures.

“Some students have temporarily abandoned the hostels to squat elsewhere although it is not allowed.

“If you raise the issue, you are threatened with expulsion,” the student said.

Nust hostels accommodate about 150 male and female students.

Nust public relations officer Felix Moyo said electricians were in the process of rectifying the fault.

“I understand that the cable that leads to the student hostels, which is three metres deep, has developed a fault and that it takes time to repair. We are mindful that students will start writing their examinations soon, so the anomaly will be rectified,” Moyo said.
