MORE than 4 000 underprivileged families and 17 charitable institutions in Bulawayo yesterday received groceries and 30 wheelchairs worthy $33 487 from the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

The fund had aimed to raise $100 000 to give the city’s underprivileged residents some form of cheer for the festive season, but only a total of $33 487,79 was raised due to the volatile economic climate.
Speaking at the handover ceremony at the Large City Hall, mayor Martin Moyo said the Christmas Cheer Fund was honoured to be able to distribute proceeds to various charitable institutions and vulnerable families in Bulawayo.
Moyo commended members of the community for being generous even in these difficult times when there was a liquidity crunch.
“This year we are honoured to be able to support 17 charitable institutions with goods and groceries,” Moyo said.
“We are also donating food hampers to 4 526 families that were identified through council’s housing and community services department. The generous donations received this year are a clear demonstration of the philanthropic spirit and kind-heartedness that is synonymous with the people of Bulawayo.
“May you continue to demonstrate the spirit of Christmas by spreading love and compassion to the vulnerable members of the city,” Moyo added.

The 17 charitable institutions that benefited are Rail Stein Old People’s Home, Edith Duly Nursing Home, Ekuphumuleni Old People’s Home, Entumbane Old People’s Home, Thembiso Children’s Home, Emthunzini Wethemba Children’s Home, King George IV, Thorngrove Hospital, Percy Ibboston, Luveve Training School for Girls, St Francis Children’s Home, John Slaven, John Smale, Bulawayo Island Hospice, Haven Trust, Muscular Dystrophy association of Zimbabwe and Butic.
The 4 526 families identified were from Lobengula, Mzilikazi, Entumbane, Emakhandeni, Luveve, Cowdray Park, Magwegwe, Pumula, Mpopoma, Tshabalala, Nkulumane and Nketa.
