No festive shows for Gweru

Unlike other cities where major shows have been staged during the Christmas holiday, Gweru only held two poorly attended gigs after December 25.

Sungura maestro Alick Macheso had a joint show with Roni Mudindo at Mtapa Hall on December 26, but few people turned up.

Although Blessing Shumba is a household name among gospel lovers, his show at the same venue on December 28 was poorly attended.

The lack of activity has been blamed on company closures and job losses in the Midlands capital.

Those who remember the days when companies like Bata, Zimglass and Zimalloys used to operate at full throttle say the city then held its own when it came to entertainment.

“When Bata or Zimalloys were paid then, you would know if there was a gig in town it would be a full house,” James Chiseko said.

Few functional companies have gone for several months without paying full salaries to workers leaving most residents without disposable incomes to spend on entertainment.
