Speaking to Southern Eye after an armed robbery in Nkulumane and Mpopoma on Sunday night, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said businesses should avoid keeping large sums of money at their premises to avoid falling prey to armed robbers.

“The business community should be on high alert and should not keep large amounts of cash on their properties,” he said.

“They have to invest in security facilities like CCTV and alarms. They should make sure that their CCTV produce good quality pictures.

“Supermarkets should make sure that tills are always emptied so that if an attack takes place, there would be small amounts of money.”

Moyo encouraged businesses to stick to their stipulated closing times as operating late exposed them to criminals.

He lamented the quality of footage produced by some business’ CCTVs saying it had poor picture quality to assist investigating officers in identifying criminals.

Several companies, shops and individuals countrywide have lost thousands of dollars worth of property and other valuables kept in safes at home and offices to armed robbers.

On Sunday evening, armed robbers pounced on Nkulumane’s Sekusile Choppies supermarket and got away with $1 200.

The robbers reportedly entered the shop and ordered till operators to hand over all money.

Three robbers also struck at Trek Garage in Mpopoma where they fired warning shots and got away with $3 500.
