Emergency workers enter the disused Durban Roodepoort Deep mine in Roodepoort, on the West Rand, to retrieve the bodies of illegal miners who died after inhaling underground gases.

At least 27 miners are believed to have died in the old gold mine since the weekend.

eNCA spoke to Patrick Matsinhanise, who is hoping that the next body to be brought up is one of his relatives.

“We really need help to bring to surface our people… our tradition does not allow us just to leave them underground ..so that we can take them home in Zimbabwe to bury them,” said Matsinhanise.

Six of his family, all illegal miners, are believed to have died underground at the Roodepoort mine.

South Africans, Mozambicans and Zimbabweans are among the miners feared dead.

Meanwhile, emergency services personnel said they won’t risk their lives trying to recover bodies in such a dangerous situation.
