The Bulawayo provincial teams have been training at Northlea while Matabeleland South were camped at Mzingwane High School.

The Bulawayo team left at 6am yesterday after the provincial education director Dan Moyo conducted a send-off ceremony at Northlea on Monday evening.

Moyo urged the athletes to use the competition to showcase their capabilities so that they could be selected for the Region V youth games to be hosted by Bulawayo in December.

Moyo also said the athletes should go to Marondera with a positive mind after the province outshone their counterparts in the Youth Games that were hosted by Bulawayo last year.

Mathomula Nare, the headmaster-in-charge (athletics) for the Matabeleland South Province said his team was not heading to Marondera to make numbers, but to scoop medals.

“We left Mzingwane High School where we have been camping as a team around 8am and we are on our way (to Marondera). We have always done well as Matabeleland South. Last year we had 17 gold medals and we are hoping for more this year,” Nare said.

The provinces will have today to rest before the competitions start tomorrow. Tomorrow, the provinces will battle it out in the cross-country competitions and conclude with track and field events on Friday.

For medals Bulawayo will be pinning hopes on Milton Boys High’s sprinter Andile Khumalo, Mncumbatha’s Pride Mugwagwa, Mpopoma’s Marvel Musundire and Townsend’s Yvonne Vanhuvaone, among others.
