GWANDA municipal workers are set to go on strike today protesting over a promised 75% salary increment that the local authority is reportedly reneging on.
CHIEF REPORTER
Sources told Southern Eye yesterday that workers were irked by the alleged council U-turn on the agreement to increase their salaries.
“Gwanda council workers are going on strike on Monday (today) morning. This is a result of the council failing to honour the 75% increment pledge, but the top management awarded themselves increments,” the source said.
“From the Friday meeting we resolved to strike and only return to work when the 75% is effected.”
Contacted for comment Gwanda mayor Knowledge Ndlovu yesterday could neither confirm nor deny the planned strike saying he was yet to be briefed.
“I cannot comment on it now, but what I am aware of is that they (workers) had a last meeting on Friday evening on the strike issue,” he said. “I am still to be briefed on it. It would be clear on Monday (today) when I get to the office.”

Chombo told the National Assembly last week that Mlilo earned less than $2 000, but took home $18 000 after allowances.
He said appropriate action would be taken if the claims were found to be true.
