I HAVE realised that in the Bulawayo city centre, there is a hair salon on every street (I am not exaggerating).

I guess the reason for so many hair salons and hairdressers is that women love to look good. The fact is an appealing hairstyle boosts your self-esteem and your self–image.

On the other hand, a hairstyle that does not suit the shape of your face and your personality can be an image breaker.

This article will give you tips on how to select a hairstyle that will suit you.

  • Body proportions When choosing a hairstyle, always consider your body proportions. A large hairstyle balances a large body structure and vice-versa. A large hairstyle makes a petite woman look smaller.
  • Facial types Another thing to consider when choosing a hairstyle is the shape of your face. There are seven facial shapes: Oval, round, square, oblong, pear-shaped, heart-shaped and diamond shaped.
  • Oval shape The oval face is often recognised as the ideal shaped face. The person with this face can wear almost any hairstyle, taking into consideration things such as eyeglass length, shape of nose, and profile of the individual.
  • Round face type Contour: Round hairline, round chin line, wide face. The aim when choosing a hairstyle is to create length to the face. Hairstyle height must be created by arranging the hair on top of the head. The hair can be worn up on one side, leaving the ears exposed. Hair can also be placed over the ears and cheeks.
  • Square face type Contour: Straight hairline, square jaw line, wide face. The aim when choosing a suitable hairdo is to create the illusion of length, and offset the square features. Asymmetrical hairstyles work well for this face type.
  • Pear-shaped face type Contour: Narrow forehead, wide jaw and chin line. When choosing a hairdo, choose one that will create the illusion of width in the forehead. For example, covering the forehead with a fringe will have this effect. The hairdo must be fairly full and high.
  • Oblong face type Contour: Long narrow face with hollow cheeks. The aim of the hairstyle is to make the face appear shorter and wider. This can be achieved by wearing a medium length to long hairdo, for example a bob cut. The idea is to create fullness to the sides.
  • Diamond face type Contour: Narrow forehead, extreme width through the cheekbones and narrow chin. Chose a style that minimizes the width across the line of cheekbones.
  • Heart-shaped face type Contour: Wide forehead and narrow chin line. When choosing a hairdo, the goal is to decrease the width of the forehead and increase the width of the lower part of the face, creating width and softness at the jaw line. Side bangs are ideal for this facial type.

Always remember, a suitable hairstyle should accentuate your good points, at the same time minimising your not-so-good features.
