THE Catholic University Bulawayo campus at the St Augustine Seminary in Sunnyside, was officially opened by vice-chancellor Ranga Zinyemba at a glitzy ceremony last Friday.

Zinyemba told guests that the university had been operating in Harare since its inception in 1998 and expansion to Bulawayo and Mutare was testimony to growth.
“As a university, we are happy to be here. This university is here to serve the local community,” he said.
“Those who are interested should be free to bring their children to this institution as it provides a service of international standard and it is also recognised by the country’s relevant authorities that deal with tertiary institutions.”
Zinyemba added that the university had a 10-year plan to introduce more programmes and increase its enrolment to 100 000 by 2022 compared to the current 1 000.
“As an institution with the help of people in this region, we are looking forward to increase our numbers by the year 2022 with the support of the local communities that we serve. It is our wish to nurture responsible citizens who will uphold the values of the country and work for the nation informed by Christian values,” he said.
The Catholic University of Zimbabwe was established on August 20 1998, through Statutory Instrument 268, Proclamation 49. The first University Council was established in October 1998. The first chancellor of the university was the late Most Reverend Patrick Fani Chakaipa,

On February 25 1999, the university opened its doors to 41 students reading for the Bachelor of Business Management and Information Technology (Honours) degree.
In August 2000, the Bachelor of Arts degree was added. In 2010, there were over 300 students in the two faculties – the Faculty of Business Management and Information Technology and the Faculty of Humanities. The proportion of men to women is about 50:50. The Catholic University of Zimbabwe provides holistic education in a Christian environment in its teaching, research and service programmes.
The Bulawayo campus has at most 50 students who are studying various programmes. The event was graced by vice-chancellors from other universities. The Roman Catholic archbishop of Bulawayo Alex Thomas attended the event.
