Zvishavane town secretary Tinoda Mukutu said the new complex was necessitated by the current congestion in the mining town’s central business district (CBD).

“The town’s population and business activities are no longer tallying with the structures we currently have. As you can see, our town has become the busiest in the Midlands province due to mining activities and also as a link town to Masvingo and Matabeleland,” Mukutu said.

“We have decided to decongest our CBD by constructing a shopping mall and other modern buildings along Drinkwater and Pappenfus avenues.”

Zvishavane is one of the small towns in Zimbabwe that has remained vibrant and has lots of activity due to platinum mining.

“The closure of Shabanie Mine has shown less impact on the town’s activities due to the existence of the platinum-rich Mimosa Mine together with chrome and gold mines.

“The Midlands State University will be joining us soon and what it means is that there is going to be more activity causing more congestion, hence the new complex will ease the commotion,” Mukutu said.

Zvishavane Residents and Ratepayers’ Association chairperson Constance Muguti applauded council for the move saying this would enhance the town’s bid for city status.

“The move was long overdue since the town’s population had become too much for few resources. The town has many cars and we now don’t spend two days without hearing of an accident due to congestion, hence the development is greatly appreciated,” he said.
