THE Gweru district administrator (DA)’s offices have gone for close to a month without power after Zesa Holdings installed a prepaid electricity meter which has not been topped up.

The power blackout has affected the Magistrates’ Court 4 and Regional Court that are housed at the DA’s block.
Acting DA Langton Mupeta confirmed the lengthy blackout to Southern Eye yesterday saying it was as a result of the national power utility installing the prepaid meter.
“The prepaid meter was installed more than three months ago and to date power has not been topped up because only head office (Local Government ministry) handles finances,” Mupeta said.
He said as a district office they could not use the money they handled and, therefore, couldn’t buy prepaid electricity for the DA’s block.
Mupeta then referred further inquiries to the provincial administrator’s office.
Midlands provincial administrator Cecilia Chitiyo was, however, not available for comment yesterday.

However, sources said the current cash crunch affecting government departments was delaying the disbursement of funds to local authorities adversely affecting their operations.
