Mgobi Nhliziyo of Entembeni Village under Chief Masuku was arrested in Esigoni after he disappeared following the death of his brother Nkululeko.

It could not be immediately ascertained what caused the scuffle that led to the gruesome murder. However, the brothers had allegedly spent the whole day drinking together at the local shopping centre.

Mgobi reportedly told his father on arrival at home that he had left his brother along the way as he was too drunk to walk.

The following morning, Mgobi allegedly went to his brother’s homestead where he asked the deceased’s son to accompany him to fetch his brother.

The two found Nkululeko dead and Mgobi asked the deceased’s son to watch over the body while he alerted elders.

Mgobi reportedly disappeared from the village.

Meanwhile, he admitted killing his brother when he briefly appeared before Gwanda magistrate Olivia Mashaire yesterday.

Mgobi was remanded in custody to August 27 and advised to apply to the High Court for bail.

The court heard that on Saturday the accused assaulted his now-deceased brother believed to be aged over 40, several times all over the body using a log.

Mgobi allegedly went on to strike his brother twice on the head using stones.

In requesting for further remand, the investigating officer said he feared that once released Mgobi would abscond as he is facing a serious offence.

He said they feared he could commit suicide or intimidate his relatives lined up as State witnesses.

There has been an increase in murder cases in Gwanda district over the past months with people getting killed over petty issues.
