Chamisa free to join MDC-Renewal team: Mafume

THE MDC-Renewal team has said ex-MDC-T organising secretary Nelson Chamisa will be welcome to join the Tendai Biti-led movement if he feels disgruntled at the outcome of his party’s elective congress that saw him losing the secretary-general post to Douglas Mwonzora.

MDC-Renewal spokesperson Jacob Mafume said Chamisa was free to join the team as the “future mattered most” than past political squabbles. Mafume dismissed reports that Biti and Chamisa did not see eye to eye following the split of the MDC-T.

“Biti and Chamisa were close, whatever happened is in the past and it was nothing personal,” Mafume said. “We need to look to the future. We are reorganising, therefore, he can be where his skills are best utilised like all others who have joined.”

Biti wanted Tsvangirai ousted, whereas Chamisa fought strongly in the former premier’s corner.

Chamisa was widely expected to clinch the secretary-general’s post, but was defeated by Mwonzora, the former MDC-T secretary for publicity and information, who garnered 2 464 votes against the former organising secretary’s 1 762.

Since his defeat, the media savvy Chamisa has been avoiding journalists. Writing on his Facebook page, MDC-T returnee Job Sikhala eulogised Mwonzora, whom he said would take the party forward as secretary-general because of his maturity.

“He has a high level of maturity and love,” he wrote.

Chamisa was not available for comment yesterday.
