HIPPO Valley stamped their authority in Zimbabwean hockey when they beat compatriots Eradicators in a Hockey African Club Cup of Champions match played at Kumalo Hockey Stadium yesterday.

Matthew Williams was first to register his name on the score sheet when he struck from a well-taken short corner by captain Tafuma Kanyiwe in the third minute.

Donald Mutupa made it two for the Tongaat Hulett-sponsored side from a penalty shot following an infringement in the 24th minute.

Mutupa made it a brace less than a minute later. Hippo Valley pulled one back through Fungai Mavengere soon after halftime following a pass from Kudzanai Tembo in the 47th minute.

Tembo had done most of the work dribbling past goalkeeper Tinavo Mashavi to pass to Mavengere. Eradicators crept back into the match through another field goal from Forbes Thindwa in the 53rd minute. Thindwa rounded goalkeeper Mushavi to score.

Hippo Valley then went two goals up 10 minutes apart through Arnold Mpofu and Williams.

“It was not our best match,” said coach Tongai Mukwewa. “We did not follow our usual game plan. It was a typical derby, very physical and intense, which is always expected of a derby. We wanted to keep the ball longer, but we were struggling.”

Eradicators captain Michael Banda said: “It was not a bad performance, but we played better hockey from our previous matches. It is the first time we are here and we have learnt a lot from Ghana and Egypt.”

Trustees of Ghana beat Nigeria’s Police Machines 4-0 while Strathmore won 12-0 against Genetrix.
