THE Zimbabwe Volleyball Association (ZVA) will not be a sending a team to the Under-19 Boys’ Youth African Nations Championship starting in Tunisia on January 19 due to financial constraints.
ZVA secretary Ringisai Mapondera confirmed that the association would not be sending a team due to budgetary constraints.
“We are not sending a team to Tunisia although we already had a team on standby. This is due to financial constraints; our budget does not allow us,” Mapondera said.
Last year, the association failed to raise $15 000 to send four Under-23 players for the World Championships in Poland.
Efforts to get assistance from the government have proved futile as the Sport, Arts and Culture ministry has indicated that it did not have the money to assist teams.
The African Volleyball Confederation said the championships were used as qualifiers to the to the Boys’ Under-19 World Championship 2015. The deadline for confirmation of registration for the tournament by member associations was last Friday.
