The anointing (part one)

“Definition, Purpose, Ingredients & Measurement of the Anointing Oil.”

Isaiah 10 vs 27, it shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder. And his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.  1 John 2 vs 20, but you have an anointing from the holy one, and you know all things.

Acts 10 vs 38, “how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the holy spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

Luke 4 vs 18,  “the spirit of the lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted.

To proclaim liberty to  the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed”.What is the anointing?

Very  few Christians have a true understanding of the anointing.  They probably know that the anointing involves power, that it has something to do with the Holy Spirit, and that’s about it.

The anointing is the manifest presence of God.  The word “anoint” means to rub with oil, especially in order to consecrate something (holy object) or someone (holy person).

The anointing is tangible and when God’s presence manifests, something supernatural happens. The anointing is the supernatural equipping to perform supernatural things of God.  The anointing is the manifest presence and power of God upon the life of the believer.

God’s anointed vessels are clothed with a mantle of God’s supernatural power.  The word of God teaches us that it is not our might, or our power, but it is the power of God’s holy spirit that enables us to perform mighty deeds.

The anointing is the manifest presence and power of God upon the life of a believer.  It is the abiding effect of the holy spirit from the anointed one, the Lord Jesus Christ himself.

It is the fulfilment of the promise prophesied by many of the Old Testament prophesies. Many Christian leaders and believers try to live their lives without the anointing.

That places a tremendous burden upon them and that is why their ministry or Christian walk is an uphill struggle.

However, that should not be the case.  Jesus tells us to take His burden and to put on His yoke, because it is not too heavy or too difficult.

Isaiah 10 vs 27, it shall come to pass in that day That his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

In the Old Testament, only selected individuals were anointed.

Ordinary men and women were excluded from the manifest power and presence and anointing of God.  However, on the day of Pentecost, all that changed.

The Holy Spirit was poured out on all flesh – men and women, Jews and gentiles, rich and poor, free and slave.  The anointing enables every believer to know the truth about the person of Jesus Christ.

The Christ (Christos, anointed one) and anointing (charisma) are from the same Greek root.

Understanding the anointing In the Old Testament, those things that were to be set apart and consecrated for use in the things of God were anointed with the anointing oil.

Once anointed, they were holy and separated for that use only.  The ancient use of the word “anoint” simply meant to “rub in” or “smear on” a substance like oil.

Quite often fragrant oil was used to signify the transfer of: authority, power and honour.   Anointing oil in the Old Testament was applied to the following groups of people.

Priests,

Prophets,

Kings.

This was an outward symbol of the spirit of God, signifying a transfer of authority, power and honour.  It symbolised the fact that the ones anointed had become  spiritually empowered to conduct business in the office to which God had called them.

The anointing of these persons with oil into these offices was considered as an emblem of the communication of the gifts and graces of the holy spirit.

The anointing throughout history Anointing rituals have been carried out since ancient times in all cultures and societies.

Some of the Old Testament participants

Saul, David,  Solomon, others participated in these anointing rituals.  In the case of males, fourth century Christians were symbolically anointed to be kings.  Females were anointed as queens.

Later Roman Catholic popes and Christian political leaders participated in coronation ceremonies where they were anointed for service.  From the 10th century onwards, all Christian Kings in France, England, and Germany were anointed.

They considered the ritual very important and believed it conferred on them a sacred anointing from God himself.  The coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2 1953 was shown on television and was reminiscent of the ancient rite of the anointing.

Anointing with oil has always played an important part in the history and experience of the church, but it symbolises something far greater than a mere ritual.

It speaks of the Holy Spirit anointing believers for effective leadership and imparting supernatural ability.

The five-fold purpose of the anointing The anointing is the unusual presence of the Holy Spirit in a person or place at a particular time.  In the Old Testament times, the anointing came on people in order to accomplish a specific task through them.

Anointing for Deliverance The anointing enabled Jesus to minister deliverance to the captives.  It empowered Him to minister effectively to the needs of mankind.

Luke 4 vs 17-19, he was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, the spirit of the lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted.

“To proclaim liberty to  the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed;19, to proclaim the acceptable year of the lord”.

Anointing for healing The sick are to be anointed with oil for healing.  When the sick are prayed for and the anointing oil applied, the power of God touches them and they are healed.  James 5 vs 14-15, is anyone among you sick?

Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Anointing for blessing The anointing empowers believers to enjoy success and prosperity.

Proverbs 10 vs 22, The blessing of the lord makes one rich. He adds no sorrow with it.  Psalm 35 vs 27, let them shout for joy and be glad. Who favour my righteous cause; and let them say continually, “let the lord be magnified”.  glorified.”
