This came to light when London Ndlovu (43), Irvine Chinhuru (30), John Ungana (35) and Sishwashwa Mathe (27) appeared before the Western Commonage provincial magistrate, Willard Mafios Moyo charged with contravening Section 41 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

They were all remanded in custody to February 10 for continuation of trial.

Prosecutor Mufaro Mageza told the court that the gang had been drinking beer at Pumula South bar, when a police officer, Partmore Zhungu, approached a woman who was with Ndlovu. Zhungu, who was reportedly drunk that night, proposed love to Resistance Nkomo.

When Ndlovu heard that his girlfriend was being proposed love to by some man, hell broke loose and a fight ensued. Upon hearing the misunderstanding, another member of the gang joined in and bashed the cop with empty beer bottles, stones and booted him all over the body.

The cop fell down with blood gashing from his body and was immediately rushed to hospital, where he was admitted at the intensive care unit.

“He proposed love to me, but I told him my boyfriend was around so he should leave me alone,” Nkomo testified.

“He kept on persisting until my boyfriend heard him, that is when he was assaulted.”

Onlookers reported the matter to the police, who immediately rushed to the scene, but the gang had left.
