Mpofu’s Mpopoma house was, in the early hours of Friday and Monday morning, stoned by party supporters, who allegedly left strange artefacts, with written messages threatening to bewitch her.

Mpofu has been resisting moves to push her aside, inviting the wrath of opponents in the party who are targeting toppling acting provincial chairperson Dorcas Sibanda.

Sibanda’s Paddonhurst house was stoned early on Friday and Monday and she accused party opponents of being behind the attack. Both Sibanda and Mpofu told Southern Eye that they feared for their lives.

“They left strange things wrapped with a party head scarf and a message that they would bewitch me if I do not step down,” Mpofu said in an interview.

“I don’t feel safe anymore where I stay after they stoned my lodgings.

“I cannot rule out the fact that those who were hired to stone my house and threaten me could have been working with Zanu PF.”

Sibanda added: “The national council (NC) and the constitution of the party are very clear on who should be the acting chairperson of the province in the event that the substantive chair is not around or removed.

“As such, I am the acting chairperson and those that are realising that I am guided and empowered by the NC and the constitution have resorted to such barbaric criminal acts to force me to step aside.”

No comment could be obtained from Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo on whether there had been any arrests.
