Sports and Recreation Commission provincial co-ordinator for Bulawayo, Sam Dzvimbu, confirmed the cancellation yesterday.

“It’s true the celebrations have been cancelled. We just learnt from the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) on Monday that the event had been cancelled,” Dzvimbu said.

“We had made arrangements and preparations as the local organising committee and we had covered 80% ground for the celebrations. People in the city were geared up for the event.”

He referred NewsDay Sports to ZOC projects officer Chiedza Mafunga, but she could not be reached on her mobile phone to shed light on the reasons for the cancellation of the celebrations.

Olympic Day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23 1894 in Paris.

The aim was to promote participation in sport internationally regardless of age, gender or athletic ability. The 2016 Olympic Games will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
