Chief Ndanga of Shurugwi said it was disheartening that the economy was bleeding because of dishonesty by people particularly at State-run institutions.

“There is need for a national prayer committee to be set up so that the nation can have a day to pray for an end to corruption,” Ndanga said on Saturday in his closing remarks at a Zimbabwe Environmental Law Association (Zela) tax justice workshop in Shurugwi.

Ndanga, who quoted from George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm, said the scenario particularly in parastatals was that those in high offices were getting away with corrupt activities without being arrested.

“We have a situation where some animals become more equal than others and nothing is done to them when the long arm of the law is extended to those who engage in corruption,” he said.

Participants at the workshop cited the recent audit report by the Auditor-General, Mildred Chiri which exposed high-level corruption and fraudulent activities at State enterprises.
