Alphos Chitsa was yesterday slapped with an effective 16-year jail term for rape and robbery. Chitsa (27) also got a two-year term for the robbery when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mark Dzira.
Four years of his rape sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
In passing sentence, Dzira said rape was a serious offence as it left permanent scars on the victim.
He said the court had considered that the woman who was raped and robbed in this case had managed to identify her assailant two years after the incident.
“In coming up with the sentence you deserve, the court considers that rape is rampant these days,” he said.

The court heard that Chitsa raped the woman sometime in 2012 and met her again in 2014 where he was arrested as he proposed love to her.
Prosecutor Tinashe Dzipe said Chitsa raped and robbed the victim along Khami Road on March 4 2014.
On March 16 2014, the woman met Chitsa again in the city where he proposed love to her.
She immediately identified him and lured him towards Mzilikazi Police Station where she blew the lid on Chitsa, leading to his arrest.
