MEIKLES Limited has appointed Fayaz King acting chairperson, as the retailer seeks to tap into the experience of the business executive, who previously had a stint with the United Nations.
In a statement, Meikles said the appointment is with effect from July 3 this year.
It described King as a “distinguished Zimbabwean business leader”, with over 30 years of executive experience spanning telecommunications, information technology, the digital economy and innovation.
“Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a proven ability to drive operational excellence, spearhead strategic initiatives and optimise business processes to enhance efficiency and profitability. Mr. King has successfully led cross-functional teams, championed innovation and delivered transformative technology solutions across diverse sectors and regions,” Meikles said.
King previously served as special adviser (Assistant Secretary-General level) to the United Nations Secretary-General’s envoy on technology, where he advised on the global impact of technology, emerging trends and policy frameworks.
“In this capacity, he facilitated collaboration on the sustainable development goals through digital platforms, advocated for digital inclusion, connectivity and skills development, and championed secure, trusted and accessible internet infrastructure,” Meikles said.
“Previously, Mr. King served as Assistant Secretary General and deputy executive director of Field Results and Innovation at Unicef, where he integrated ICT systems across 154 international offices and led high-performing teams.
“He oversaw large-scale global projects, strengthened innovation funding, established global innovation centres, and played a key role in coordinating the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines to over 141 countries.”

The retailer said King was deeply committed to harnessing emerging technologies to drive digital transformation and foster sustainable business growth.
“He brings to the board an unwavering dedication to achieving exceptional results and advancing the organisation’s strategic objectives,” Meikles said.
“The board welcomes Mr. King to his new role and looks forward to his leadership in steering the organisation towards continued success.
Meikles also announced the resignation of executive director Matthew J.S. Moxon, whom the former board directors had sought to appoint as the group’s chief executive officer.
The listed retailer was thrust into the spotlight last year following boardroom squabbles involving then chairperson John Moxon on one hand and the quartet of former directors Rugare Chidembo, James Mushore, Stewart Cranswick and Simon Hammond.
The quartet resigned at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) that had been called for their ouster.
That EGM appointed King, Marcel Golding and Benjamin Ward to the board. Another director, Sharon Bwanya, was appointed on February 3 this year.
