Businesses urged to abide by the law, observe consumer rights

THE Industry and Commerce ministry has pleaded with businesses to abide by the law and adhere to consumer rights.

In a statement yesterday, Industry minister Sekai Nzenza said the recently gazetted consumer protection law was meant to make sure there was no abuse of consumers.

Government recently gazetted consumer protection regulations through Statutory Instrument 123 of 2023 to protect consumers from unfair and deceptive trading practices.

“The Ministry of Industry and Commerce, therefore, wants to encourage the business community to ensure that they abide by the law,” Nzenza said.

“The thrust of the law is to ensure there is harmony in the marketplace, where business thrives while at the same time consumer rights are observed.

“The ministry is working with the Consumer Protection Commission to ensure that awareness campaigns are intensified in every corner of the country.”

One of the key features of the regulations is the accreditation of consumer protection advocacy groups (CPAGs).

CPAGs are organisations that promote or represent the interests of consumers.

The regulations also established a process for designating consumer protection organisations.

In addition, the regulations require businesses to have an internal mechanism for resolving consumer disputes.
