Brent leaves Lady Chevrons

Gary Brent has stepped down as Zimbabwe women's cricket team coach following the expiry of his contract with Zimbabwe Cricket in December.

GARY Brent has stepped down as Zimbabwe women's cricket team coach following the expiry of his contract with Zimbabwe Cricket in December.

The former Zimbabwe Test bowler will now pursue a coaching career in Australia. Batting coach, Walter Chawaguta, who is currently in Sri Lanka with the senior men's team as the caretaker coach, is tipped to take over the reins from Brent.

Brent (47) was appointed Lady Chevrons head coach in March 2022 replacing former coach Adam Chifo who is now the Rhinos men's team gaffer in domestic franchise.

The major highlight of Brent's stint with the Lady Chevrons is taking them to the International Cricket Council Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier scheduled for the United Arab Emirates this year. A victorious hunt in UAE will see the Lady Chevrons book a ticket to Bangladesh this year for the T20 World Cup.

He bullied the associate sides into submission as Zimbabwe bagged the Qualifier Africa Cup on a 100% winning record.

“Yes, my contract has expired and unfortunately I am moving on,” Brent told NewsDay Sport yesterday.

“I, hopefully, have left the girls in a better place. Some great opportunities have opened up and I need to spend more time with my family.”

At its November board meeting in Victoria Falls, ZC announced a raft of changes to other national teams leaving out the Lady Chevrons.  “There are no changes to the women's cricket set-up, although the board will review the tenures of Zimbabwe senior women's national team head coach Gary Brent and captain Mary-Anne Musonda after the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier set for Uganda in December,” a statement by ZC in November read.

Meanwhile, the Lady Chevrons went into camp yesterday for the home series against Ireland Women scheduled for next week.

Skipper, Mary-Anne Musonda, top order batters Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano and Ashley Ndiraya as well as all-rounder Precious Marange, seamers, Audrey Mazvishaya and Nomvelo Sibanda all took part in the fitness tests. Spinner, Lorryn Phiri, wicketkeeper, Chiedza Dhururu, Pellagia Mujaji and Beloved Biza, among others also made it for the fitness training.

Fitness expert, Clement Rizhibowa, assistant coaches, Trevor Garwe, Chipo Kanjanda and Malcolm Chikuwa presided over the rigorous fitness drills at Harare Sports Club yesterday.
