Duo in trouble for fake CIO ID

Police in Harare have arrested two people for pretending to be officers from the President’s Office.

The duo appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi facing an allegation of forging a Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) identification card.

Guide Merejara (57) and his accomplice, 41-year-old Gladys Matopewere were remanded in custody to tomorrow for bail ruling.

Prosecutor Thomas Chanakira told the court that Merejara and Matopewere received instructions from one Tafadzwa Francis Chitsinde, who is still at large, to print a fake CIO identity card for one Washington Mavhiki.

On January 25 this year, Chitsinde allegedly sent Mavhiki’s picture and EC No 176522 to Matopewere to give Merejara to print the forged identification card.

The court heard that Matopewere went to the informant, Malvin Dyariwa, at Runako Printing and Design, where he threatened him.

He also allegedly misrepresented himself as a member of the CIO.

Matopewere allegedly instructed Dyariwa to print the fake CIO identity card telling him that he can collect the payment at the CIO offices at Harare Central Police Station.

Dyariwa printed the identification card and handed it to Merejara.

The court further heard that after some time, Dyariwa’s employer questioned him about the payment and instructed him to go and collect it from the CIO offices.

However, when he arrived at the police station, it was discovered that Merejara was not a CIO officer and he was advised to file a police report, leading to the arrest of Merejara and Matopewere.
