Guard in trouble for stealing copper cables

The accused, Charles Shaya, was remanded in custody to March 26 for bail application.

A 52-YEAR-OLD security guard stationed at TelOne premises in Msasa, who allegedly stole copper cables worth US$3 600, on Monday appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi facing a theft charge.

The accused, Charles Shaya, was remanded in custody to March 26 for bail application.

According to court papers, on March 22, at around midday, Shaya and his accomplices, Hardlife Maburutse and Alex Kubvoruno, stole TelOne copper cables from company premises in Msasa.

It is reported that one of the accused persons hired the services of the informant Padington Shungu, who is a taxi driver, to ferry the cables.

It is alleged that the accused directed Shungu to TelOne premises where Shaya was on night duty together with Maburutse and Kubvoruno.

The accused loaded the cables in two vehicles before heading to Chishawasha Mountain where they offloaded and hid them.

Shungu filed a police report leading to the arrest of the accused.
