HARARE Apr.22 (NewsDay Live) - Dzivarasekwa residents in Harare are set to experience significant disruptions to their water supply as authorities begin a major overhaul of the area’s distribution network. The project, being carried out by Helcraw Water Pvt Ltd in partnership with the City of Harare, will see the replacement of ageing asbestos pipes with new PVC infrastructure, alongside the installation of new valves.
Ward 45 councillor Jubilation Shoko warned that the works would interfere with the normal water schedule, urging residents to prepare for intermittent shortages.
“As a result of the upgrade, there will be massive disruptions to the usual water timetable and as such residents are encouraged to stay prepared and use the available water sparingly,” she said.
The upgrade is expected to improve water delivery in the long term, addressing persistent supply challenges that have affected the suburb for years. According to Shoko, the intervention is designed to “solve much if not all of our water distribution challenges as a district,” raising hopes among residents for a more reliable system once the works are completed.
Construction has already begun along Robert Mugabe Way, stretching from Dzivarasekwa Stadium towards Dzivarasekwa High 1 School. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution as much of the work is taking place along pipelines that run parallel to major roads.
Authorities have also called on property owners with structures built on top of water pipes to cooperate with the ongoing works.
“Temporary structure owners… whose structures are sitting on top of water pipes are encouraged to safely remove their structures and cooperate with the team on the ground so that the works can be completed in time,” Shoko said.
The project comes amid ongoing efforts by the City of Harare to modernise ageing infrastructure and improve service delivery in high-density suburbs.
