As an independent observer, the opening of China’s 15th National Games, co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, struck a chord with me. The grand event not only celebrates athletic achievement but also stands as a living testament to China’s rapid social and economic transformation.

The National Games, often described as “China’s mini-Olympics,” serve as the country’s highest-level domestic sporting competition. This year’s edition, which runs from November 9 to 21, is particularly historic as it marks the first time the Games have been co-hosted across three regions, symbolizing China’s deepening integration and cooperation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The event embodies the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation through unity, innovation, and shared prosperity.

Advancing sports and modernisation

In a moment that underscored the strategic importance of sports in China’s modernization drive, President Xi Jinping met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry and IOC Honorary President for Life Thomas Bach during the opening ceremony of the National Games.

President Xi highlighted China’s long-standing partnership with the IOC, noting that both sides have “supported each other in advancing sport development and achieving many great things.” He reaffirmed China’s readiness to deepen high-standard cooperation with the IOC and to continue advancing the Olympic Movement in alignment with the spirit of peace, friendship, and mutual respect.

Xi’s engagement with Coventry and Bach was not merely ceremonial—it was a reaffirmation of China’s global leadership role in sports diplomacy. As the world’s most populous nation, China recognizes sport as an integral part of people-to-people exchanges, international cooperation, and the promotion of shared human values.

Kirsty Coventry: A bridge between Africa and the Olympic movement

Kirsty Coventry’s presence at the National Games holds special significance. As a former Olympic champion from Zimbabwe and now IOC President, Coventry represents a new generation of sports leadership that transcends borders. Her meeting with President Xi symbolized the growing collaboration between China and Africa within the framework of global sports development.

Coventry praised China’s efforts in promoting youth sports, infrastructure development, and inclusive participation. She emphasized that China’s model of integrating sport into its broader social and economic agenda offers valuable lessons to the world, especially developing nations.

This year’s National Games are the first to be co-hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, a move that underscores the growing importance of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) as a model of modernization and integration. The region is one of China’s most open and economically dynamic zones, combining world-class infrastructure, innovation-driven industries, and a vibrant cultural landscape.

Sports as a pillar of national development

For China, sports are not just about competition—they are about nation-building, unity, and character development. The National Games serve as a platform for identifying and nurturing talent, promoting fitness among citizens, and inspiring patriotism.

Beyond the medals and records, the 15th National Games tell a broader story—the story of a nation in transformation. From the cutting-edge sports venues equipped with renewable energy systems to the use of AI-driven technology in broadcasting and logistics, the Games epitomize the spirit of China’s modernization.

China’s collaboration with the International Olympic Committee continues to deepen. The success of previous international events, including the Beijing Winter Olympics, has strengthened mutual trust and respect between China and the IOC.

The 15th National Games have captured the hearts of millions across China. From the dazzling opening ceremony to the powerful athletic performances, the event has reinforced a sense of national pride and collective aspiration.

The 15th National Games stand as more than a celebration of athleticism—they are a vivid illustration of China’s journey toward national rejuvenation. Through sports, China showcases not only its strength on the field but also its capacity for innovation, inclusivity, and international cooperation.
