Govt honours Gems pledge

The Gems were making their second global appearance after their maiden participation in 2019 in Liverpool, UK where they finished in an impressive eighth position.

GOVERNMENT has rewarded the Zimbabwe senior netball team with winning bonuses and appearance fees for their World Cup participation which took place in Cape Town, South Africa in August this year.

The Gems were making their second global appearance after their maiden participation in 2019 in Liverpool, UK where they finished in an impressive eighth position.

However, this time around, the team struggled posting a series of defeats in their pool matches, eventually finishing last.

They, however, regained their momentum when they were already in the bottom four contest, ending the campaign on position 13 out of 16 teams.

To honour its pledge and support to the team, government, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation awarded the players winning bonuses, appearance fees and flight tickets reimbursement.

Each player received a winning bonus of US$300 per game for the three matches they won in the bottom four contest and appearance fees of US$100 for each of the seven matches they played.

Each player went home with $1 600 for their efforts.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Netball Association thanked the government for its unwavering support to the team and honouring their commitment.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Government of Zimbabwe, especially the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, for their unwavering support and for ensuring that our athletes are well-compensated for their hard work and dedication on the global stage. This gesture not only reinforces the value placed on our national teams but also serves as a motivation for the Gems and other sporting disciplines,” the statement read.

“The Zimbabwe Netball Association remains committed to the development and promotion of netball in the country and is grateful for the continued partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe and all our stakeholders. This gesture underlines the commitment and belief in our team and reinforces our dedication to representing Zimbabwe with pride and honour. Thank you, Zimbabwe!”

Meanwhile, the Gems are set to participate in the 13th edition of the Africa Netball Cup to be staged in Botswana later this year.
