No respite for Caps United

CAPS United face yet another tough task when they travel to Bulawayo to face Highlanders in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday.

The Green Machine lost out on the Chibuku Super Cup when they were dismissed 2-0 in the semi-finals by Dynamos at the National Sports Stadium at the weekend.

Their mission now is to end the season in a respectable position in the league, where they are statistically still not safe from relegation.

Caps are on position eight on the log table with 37 points and five matches remain to the end of the season, holding a potential 15 points if they win all the games.

Save for bottom-placed Cranborne Bullets with 23 points, all the 10 teams behind seventh-placed Chicken Inn (44 points) are still fighting the dreaded chop.

The Lloyd Chitembwe-coached Makepekepe have not beaten any of the top seven teams this season, losing both sets of matches to Dynamos and Manica Diamonds, playing a draw and defeat to log leaders Ngezi Platinum Stars and lost to FC Platinum, while playing two draws against Chicken Inn.

Against Highlanders, Caps United made another trip to Bulawayo, when the National Sports Stadium was closed for renovations and they fell 2-1 to Bosso in July.

They atoned for that defeat when they bundled Bosso out of the Chibuku Super Cup following a penalty shootout in the quarter-finals at BF early in the month.

Last year, Caps United, who struggled again, failed to beat Highlanders, losing at BF and playing a draw in Harare.

Highlanders have also struggled of late, watching their title dreams slowly disappear in their face after only winning one match in their last 11 outings following a 19-match unbeaten run.

They have been relegated to position three from the top with 48 points, nine behind Ngezi Platinum Stars and one less Dynamos, who have a game in hand away to Manica Diamonds to be played tomorrow at Gibbo Stadium.

Highlanders will try to continue their championship quest albeit coach Baltemar Brito having ruled out the Bulawayo giants from the championship race.

Ngezi Platinum Stars also have a tough one as they head to the Colliery Stadium for Hwange at the weekend, while Dynamos host Black Rhinos.

Manica Diamonds will be away to Sheasham at the weekend, while FC Platinum visit Chicken Inn at Luveve.
