
Zimbabwe’s premier resort town springs to life today as more than 5 000 athletes from over 30 countries compete in the 2025 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, one of Africa’s most prestigious long-distance races.
Now in its 18th year, the internationally certified event features a total prize pool of US$50 000 and has attracted elite runners from around the world, including Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, the United States, Germany, and Australia.
“We’re proud to support a sporting event that promotes wellness and brings global attention to our country’s beauty and warm hospitality,” said Econet Wireless Zimbabwe’s Group CEO, Douglas Mboweni.
Among the athletes vying for top honours are previous champions and elite Zimbabwean runners that includeOlympian Isaac Mpofu, Moses Tarakinyu, Ethel Pangiso, Tendai Zimuto, and Blessing Waison.
They will face off against strong international contenders in the full and half marathon categories.
The US$50 000 in prize money will be awarded to the top 10 finishers in the full marathon and half marathon (both male and female), as well as in the wheelchair and hand-cycle categories.
All races start at Baobab Primary School in the city and include a crossing of the iconic Victoria Falls Bridge, with scenic routes that trace the Zambezi River offering breathtaking views and encounters with local wildlife amid the scenic terrain.
Organisers have put in place comprehensive safety measures in collaboration with local authorities – including the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority. The measures alsoinclude on-site medical teams, mobile ambulances, hydration stations, route marshals, digital timing chips, runner tracking, and security patrols for effective crowd management.

“The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon is a model for international sporting excellence undergirded by close collaboration among the organizers, sponsors and the local community – including the town council,” an Econet spokesperson said.
The marathon has become a vital catalyst for tourism and community development. Hotel occupancy in Victoria Falls has reached 100%, with local enterprises experiencing a significant boost in business.
Proceeds from the event support wildlife conservation, anti-poaching initiatives, and community development through partnerships with organisations such as the Greenline Africa Trust and Ele-Collection.
From its modest beginnings in 2006, the Econet Victoria Falls Marathon has grown into a key event on the global running calendar.
Many participants combine race day with wildlife safaris, boat cruises, and cultural experiences — making it one of the most unique and immersive sporting events in the world.
