HARARE, Apr. 23 (NewsDay Live) – Gladiators Women Cricket Club are within one win of clinching the Julia Chibhabha Women’s League title after a five-wicket victory over Takashinga Women at Prince Edward School’s Chapel Field at the weekend.
The Chitungwiza-based side moved to 21 points from 12 matches, registering 10 wins and one loss. Takashinga remain on 19 points from 14 matches, with nine wins and four defeats.
Gladiators’ bowling attack, led by Salem Museka and Passionate Munorwei, dismissed Takashinga for 76 in 27.4 overs. Museka claimed 5 for 23 from seven overs, while Munorwei took 3 for 15 in 4.4 overs. Vimbai Mutungwindu (23) and Anisha Dzingai (14) were the only Takashinga batters to reach double figures.
In reply, Gladiators reached 82 for five in 14.2 overs. Nicolette Nyika top-scored with 27 off 28 balls, while Kellis Ndlovu sealed the win with an unbeaten 18 off eight deliveries.
Old Hararians Women are third on 19 points, while Robert Mugabe Women sit fourth on 11. White Rhinos and Glenshire Cricket Club are level on five points apiece in fifth place.
The league enters its final round of matches this weekend, according to Eagles general manager Moses Chitare.
“The Julia Chibhabha Women’s League has been competitive this season and we’ve seen real growth in the quality of cricket,” Chitare said.
“Gladiators have shown consistency, but credit goes to all the clubs for investing in the women’s game. These are the final round-three matches this weekend, after which the season concludes.
