Zimbabwe has emerged as one of the fastest-growing forces in global sports after the national Baseball5 program rocketed an extraordinary 31 places to claim the world number 28 spot.
In the latest WBSC Baseball5 World Rankings released May 6, 2026, Zimbabwe was confirmed as one of the planet’s biggest movers, signaling a tectonic shift in the country's sporting landscape.
The meteoric rise is the direct result of an aggressive grassroots overhaul. Zimbabwe secured significant activity bonus points from the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) for the second year running—a reward for federations that prove measurable growth in schools, community engagement, and digital promotion.
Out of 62 federations worldwide, Zimbabwe’s submission stood out to global evaluators. The program now sits within striking distance of the mid-table elite, trailing just behind Indonesia at rank 27, which also saw significant gains. While established powers like Cuba, Chinese Taipei, and Japan continue to lead the world, the African continent is rapidly becoming a powerhouse.
Zimbabwe is now closing the gap on regional giants South Africa, Tunisia, and Kenya, all of whom currently feature in the global top ten.

South Africa and Tunisia have already secured their spots for the WBSC Baseball5 World Cup 2026 via the Baseball5 African Championship, setting a high benchmark for Zimbabwe’s next phase of evolution.
The timing of this surge is critical. The eyes of the sporting world are turning toward San Juan, Puerto Rico, which will host the WBSC Baseball5 World Cup from December 9 to 13, 2026. This tournament serves as a massive precursor to the sport's official Olympic debut at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar.
Baseball5’s success in Zimbabwe stems from its accessibility. As a high-speed, urban version of the game that requires no bats or gloves, it has flourished in local schools and high-density suburbs where traditional facilities are often unavailable. It is a discipline that can be played virtually anywhere, making it the perfect gateway for Zimbabwe to build its program from the ground up.
The Zimbabwe Baseball Association (ZBA) is inviting new talent and partners to join the program as they eye the top 20. The association is located at 15 Lewin Road, Southerton, Harare. Interested players or supporters can contact ZBA President Mr. John Madziro at +263 77 230 2962 or Baseball5 Commissioner Mr. Vincent Chaima at +263 77 319 8134.
The association maintains an active digital presence on Facebook at @zimbaseballassociation. For those based in the capital, the Harare Metropolitan Baseball Association remains the primary hub for local training, development, and competitions.
With a World Cup on the horizon and a generation of young athletes entering the pipeline, Zimbabwe’s baseball story is no longer just about participation—it is about global competition.
