I'm not Ollah 7, says Babongile Sikhonjwa

BABONGILE Sikhonjwa, the new host of Star FM's "The After Drive," has urged listeners to refrain from comparing him to his predecessor, Ollah 7, as he brings his own distinct style to the airwaves.

Sikhonjwa, a multi-talented comedian, entertainer, and musician, stepped into Ollah 7's shoes after the popular DJ abruptly resigned on air to pursue his own venture, the "DJ Ollah 7 podcast."

Sikhonjwa's appointment was announced by Comfort Mbofana at the Bulawayo Art Awards last week. He hosts "The After Drive" on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Reflecting on his first week at Star FM, Sikhonjwa described it as an exceptional experience, marked by a warm welcome from both colleagues and listeners.

"It was great. I was treated well by my colleagues, and listeners welcomed me with open arms. Of course, there will always be a few negative reactions, but overall, the response was overwhelmingly positive, with 75% of the feedback being favourable," Sikhonjwa remarked.

Addressing the inevitable comparisons to Ollah 7, Sikhonjwa maintained his individuality.

"I'm not DJ Ollah 7, and I'm not trying to replicate what he did. I'm here to bring my own unique flavor to the show, and that's what I'm doing. I'm here to entertain, and that's my mission," he said.

"It may take some time for some listeners to warm up to my style, but they will eventually come around. Just like Ollah 7, it took him time to gain his following. So, I'll continue doing me."

Sikhonjwa, a seasoned comedian, musician, and promoter, honed his broadcasting skills at Skyz Metro FM in 2017. His talent shone through when he clinched the prestigious award for outstanding radio journalist in 2019, beating formidable contenders like Star FM's Mai Judah and ZiFM Stereo's duo of Patience Musa and Sekuru Nhire.
