Southern Eye yesterday learnt that the 26 episode soap opera titled Baobab Ridge will hit the small screen in August.

Directed by award winning Jason Mphepo, the soap is sponsored by Population Services International (PSI) and Safaids.

PSI was behind the highly successful Studio 263, Zimbabwe’s first major soap on ZBC TV.

Mphepo said auditions, which started in May, had been completed after deciding on the title of the soap.

“We have named the soap, Baobab Ridge because of the themes that we have in it. The baobab is a tree which is firm and keeps rooted no matter what. In the soap we have a community which keeps rooted in their beliefs and culture, and individuals that are never moved from their goals,” Mphepo added.

“The soap has a lot in store ranging from the themes of love, hate and prosperity. There are different families which are rooted in their cultures, beliefs and religion,” he said.

Mphepo has worked on various productions such as the 36 television episodes of Suburb D, a comedy Ghetto Fellaz and New Dawn. He won the Outstanding Screen Production award at National Arts Merit Awards (Nama)in 2011 for New Dawn.

The soap will feature familiar faces such as Nama award winning Caroline Mashingaidze and one the country’s best rapper Tendai Nguni, better known as Tehn Diamond.
