Herenimo Giya (29), a third-year banking and finance student, appeared before Chivi magistrate Francis Mapfumo facing assault and malicious damage to property charges after he also allegedly stoned dining hall windows and spilled food.

Prosecutor Nixon Chamisa told the court that at around midday, Giya went to the dining hall and requested for food from Agnes Mudiwa without a meal ticket.

Mudiwa allegedly told him to produce a meal ticket, but he said he had cash.

Incensed by her refusal, Giya allegedly jumped over the serving counter and went into the restricted kitchen area and allegedly punched the cook before spilling pots of rice and beef.

He also allegedly started breaking utensils and windows using a broom stick.

Male kitchen staff restrained Giya and called security personnel who dragged him out, but he escaped and started stoning windows. The value of the damaged property is $210.

Giya denied the charges and he was remanded out of custody to November 6 on free bail.
