The fund was launched at a colourful function held in council chambers with businesspeople, council officials and councillors in attendance.
Speaking at the launch, Gwanda mayor Knowledge Ndlovu appealed for donations in cash or kind.
“I am appealing for your commitment to donating freely into the cheer fund for the sole purpose of putting a big smile on the faces of those less privileged,” Ndlovu said.
“A dollar can afford a decent breakfast. Never undermine your donation no matter how small. It will add value to someone’s joy and add a smile too.”
The Mayor’s Cheer Fund is a universal and community project whose aim is to work with the local community to give a deserved cheer to less privileged citizens.
Ndlovu said the fund’s objective is to bring some cheer to the town’s elderly, the disabled, destitute, orphans, the sick and child-headed families.
