‘Bomber’ Moyo wins heavyweight belt

CAPE TOWN — Top Zimbabwean boxer Elvis Moyo beat former South Africa heavyweight champion Osborne Machimana to claim the vacant World Boxing Federation All-Africa heavyweight title on Friday night.

Moyo beat Machimana on a majority 10 round points decision to win the fight at the Cape Sun Hotel in Cape Town.

Judges Rassie Erasmus and Elroy Marshal scored it 98-92 and 99-91 for Moyo and Clifford Mbelu handed in a rather surprising 95-95 score.

The result came as an upset to the former SA heavyweight champion’s supporters who saw Machimana lose to a far less experienced opponent.

Machimana’s record dropped to 18-8-2, with 13 wins inside the distance. Moyo’s improved to 4-5-2, with only one shortcut victory.

In the main supporting bout Themba Tschila beat Nkululeko Venganayi on a split decision to claim the vacant WBF All-Africa super-featherweight belt.

Tschila came in as a late replacement, but beat the Cape Town-based Zimbabwean 96-92 and 95-93 on two cards. The other judge made it 96-94 for Venganayi.

Tschila, a southpaw, improved his professional record to 26-11-3, with seven knockouts. Vengenayi’s now stands at 8-4-7.

On the undercard, WBF All Africa cruiserweight champion Kevin Lerena remained undefeated at 9-0-6 when he won his heavyweight six-rounder against Big Ben Marcel, (aka Mulumba), from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to it was Marcel’s second professional fight. In his only other recorded fight, he won on points over four rounds against Patrick Madzinga in December last year.

The tournament was presented by Steve Kalakoda of Kalakoda Promotions.
