JOHANNESBURG — Quadrant house music group Uhuru which consists of Maporisa, DJ Clap, Xelimpilo and Mapiano closed off 2013 with their single Y Tjukutja breaking into 2014 as song of the year.
Y Tjukutja was the song to wiggle and dance to in December and has sat on the number one spot in various radio stations for weeks.
It was quiet a big surprise for the newbies in the music industry.
Group member Themba Sekwane, aka Maporisa, says competition has been tough.
“We really have not expected all the attention as well as having our track dubbed song of the year for 2013. There was so much competition; we were racing against big artists such as Mafikizolo, Micasa, DJ Kent, Heavy K and Big Nuz.”
“We thought it was great to have the song listed on top songs of the year, but to come out number one was a surprise and we were happy.”
They have started the year on a successful phase with their second album titled Our Father doing phenomenally well by reaching gold status and heading for platinum. Uhuru has raised bars and standards from being underdogs to a prominent group that all big names in the industry want to work with.
This year the group looks forward to great collaborations with more African artists and doing bigger things.

“Things are getting better for us as a group. We are getting more gigs and more great artists keep approaching us for collaborations. We are talking the likes of your Naeto C, Lisa James . . . etc.
“In 2014 we just want to make a DVD, go more into live streams and we hope to work with Khuli Chana and AKA to fuse house and hip-hop together.”
At the rate that the group is going, Metro Awards could be something they are looking forward to, as well as SAMAs.
“We hope our hard work has placed us in a possible position for big awards such as Metro’s,” Maporisa added.
