ZIMBABWE Human Rights Association (ZimRights) director Okay Machisa was yesterday involved in a brawl with Gweru City Council workers after they clamped his vehicle in the city centre.

Machisa parked his car and went to buy something to eat at a fast-food outlet, and found his Ford Ranger twin cab clamped with no council worker in sight.

The ZimRights boss was not amused and attempted to remove the iron kits from his car wheel. A council worker then appeared.

When a Southern Eye crew arrived at the scene, a sizeable crowd had gathered and Machisa was hurling verbal insults at council workers.

“I am not against the city council clamping vehicles per se, but what I cannot appreciate is that you are in transit; you park your car with the intention of buying food and the council people selling parking discs are nowhere in sight,” Machisa said.

“You return a few minutes later and you find someone has clamped your vehicle without necessarily locking the clamping equipment, but they are nowhere in sight. The next thing is that they ask you for a little bribe so that you don’t go and pay the fine at council,” fumed Machisa.

Machisa said the behaviour of council workers was unacceptable and highly promoted corruption.

“It’s unacceptable; corruption should be fought at all levels if the country is to progress,” he said.

Machisa later paid the clamping fine of $45 at the municipal revenue hall before proceeding on his journey.

No comment could be obtained from council as town clerk Daniel Matawu was said to be out of the office.
