Matabeleland Swimming Board chairperson Edmore Cyprianos yesterday confirmed the team that will leave for Harare.

Nineteen girls and 39 boys from the Under-10s, Under-12s, Under-13s and 14s, Under-15s and 16 and the Under-17s will represent the province.

Cyprianos said he is confident of the team, though Harare is likely to beat them on overall marks by the virtue of having a good number of swimmers.

“We have a team that is looking very strong. Obviously when you go out for the competitions you will be looking forward to coming back with a number of medals and we want to achieve that,” he said.

“There is a trophy won by a team for the overall points and it is likely to be won by Harare because they have many athletes compared to us, but what I want to tell our swimmers is that they should go out there and work on improving their times.

“This would be the right time and platform because there is going to be a lot of competition.”

The province is going to Harare banking on Dale Bruce, boys team captain Ashby Tink, girls’ team captain Avalon Bruce, Josh Makoni, Kurt Sterner and Siduduzile Mswabuki.

Zimbabwe Swimming Board chairperson Lorna Riley said everything was in place for the competitions.

“We are excellently prepared for the competitions. We are expecting provinces to bring athletes in numbers,”Riley said.

“Those who are going to set good times are going to graduate to level three which is the national level.

“All those at club and provincial level are in level one and two so level three swimmers are the ones given chances to take part in competitions outside the country especially galas.”
