Mpofu succumbed to injuries he sustained after being hit by a sand-poacher’s truck in Emganwini high-density suburb on Saturday afternoon.

Family spokesperson Vusile Moyo said a funeral service would be held this afternoon at the Brethren-in-Christ Church (BICC) in Nketa 9 today before Mpofu’s body is ferried to his rural home.

“A funeral service will be held on Wednesday (today) afternoon at 1pm at the BICC. His body will be taken to his rural home in the evening for burial at his rural home in the morning (Thursday),” Moyo said.

“As a family, we met and came to an agreement that his rural home will be a perfect resting place for Mpofu.”

Mpofu, a councillor for Ward 25 from 1999 to 2008, had been a member of Zapu, Zanu PF, MDC-T and MDC.

He was Bulawayo deputy mayor from 2003 to 2004 and also served in different council bodies during his tenure as a councillor.

Meanwhile, a special council meeting will be held this morning in the council chambers to pay tribute to Mpofu.

Bulawayo town clerk Middleton Nyoni said the special meeting would see mayor Martin Moyo leading councillors in eulogising Mpofu before leaving for his Nketa 9 home where mourners are gathered.
