THE SEARCH for honourees for the 2014 edition of Junior Chamber International’s (JCI) Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) is still on, with just a few more days to go before entries close on April 25 2014.

We definitely want our country to be well represented at this forum that recognises the achievements of young people and honours those who excel in their fields of interest. This year’s final award ceremony will be conducted in Leipzig Germany in November during JCI’s World Congress.

Without a doubt, recognising our young people opens doors for them. The power of JCI’s TOYP programme is in its apparent prediction of future success.

People nominated under TOYP have tended to get noticed on a worldwide scale and so access opportunities that they might not have otherwise found. These take the form of excellent business opportunities, partnerships, jobs, scholarships and further awards that catapult nominees to new levels of success previously unimagined.

It is with pride that JCI Bulawayo congratulates James Bayanai, 2013 nominee under the category of business, economic and entrepreneurial accomplishment for being invited to the United States to participate in the 2014 Washington fellowship for Young African Leaders, a flagship programme introduced by American President Barack Obama.

This intense six–week academic and leadership programme will give Bayanai a chance to interact with Obama, as well as other US government, civic and business leaders, while accessing funding to grow his humanitarian initiative and learning practical professional and leadership skills from some of America’s best universities.

Past TOYP nominees hailing from Zimbabwe like Strive Masiyiwa, Sabelo Sibanda, Charlene Hewat, Betty Makoni, Tendai Wenyika also subsequently built successful organisations and took their careers to new heights respectively.

No doubt there are people they meet during their TOYP journeys that believe in the nominees and contribute in some measure to their personal and business growth, even if only by encouraging them.

As a society, we should promote the success of creative and industrious individuals in our midst because of the downstream benefits that flow to us all as our country gains increased world recognition, attracting investors and tourists.

This in turn leads to employment creation and foreign currency earnings for the country, while improving the quality of life we enjoy.

This is why JCI Bulawayo are calling on members of the public to partner with us in a journey of discovery as we together search for exceptional individuals to nominate under the JCI TOYP 2014 programme in the following categories.

  •  Business, economic and entrepreneurial accomplishment,
  • Political, legal and governmental affairs,
  • Academic leadership and accomplishment,
  • Cultural achievement,
  • Moral and environmental leadership,
  • Contribution to children, world peace and/or human rights,
  • Humanitarian and voluntary leadership,
  • Scientific and technological development,
  • Personal improvement and accomplishment,
  • Medical innovation.
