NINE rural schools have confirmed they will take part in the Under-20 Orap Zenzele Chevrolet World Cup football tournament to be staged at Gifford High School today and tomorrow.

JZ Moyo (Insiza), Thekwane, Phakamani (Plumtree), Fatima (Lupane), Sibomvu, (the Midlands), Majiji (Bubi), Maveva (Tsholotsho), Mhwali (Gwanda) and Hlangabeza in Nkayi will battle out for the honours with hosts Gifford, Milton and Mpopoma High schools. Mzingwane High School has pulled out of the competition.
Montrose High and Magwegwe High will curtain raise the boy’s final to be played on Saturday after a knock-out stage that will be played today.
Orap chief executive officer Mvuselelo Huni confirmed the tournament which will be officially opened by Sport, Arts and Culture minister Andrew Langa.
“Sport brings people together to compete, share perspectives, learn and develop bonds of friendship and to find strength to overcome obstacles,” Huni said in a statement.
“We decided to take on this project despite the tough economic times because an investment in young people can never be a price too heavy to pay as youth are the future.
If sport and this tournament in particular, inspire young people to value education, then we will be fulfilling our mission and mandate.
