The league had initially been pencilled for October 4, but has since been moved to next week.

ZVA secretary-general Ringisai Mapondera yesterday confirmed that the league would be starting next week.

“We were supposed to start our national league this week, but the clubs have requested that we start on October 11. We will have the first games in Harare,” he said.

Mapondera explained why the league was important.

“Teams that will represent the country in the Region V Club Championships to be held in Mozambique in December will use the league to prepare for the competition,” he said.

“We are hoping to use it to select players who will represent the country when we compete in the All-Africa Games qualifiers next year. This will give us more competition because there are players outside the country, so this will give us the opportunity to select the best players from the local league as well.”
