A parent, who visited the hospital with her child for treatment yesterday, said the hospital was operating with one thermometer and no action was being taken by authorities.

“We first visited the hospital on Sunday when my child was sick and the nurses told us that there was no thermometer and we had to come back today (yesterday),” the parent said.

“As a parent, it might be very worrying if your child has high temperature and we found the hospital only using one thermometer for all children in the ward.”

The parent said the institution should put its house in order as this compromised the health of patients.

“This is really shocking for such a big hospital like Mpilo to operate with one thermometer and this shows that maybe other wards are also facing the same problem,” the parent said.

Sources within the institution said there were enough thermometers, but had been disappearing.

When contacted for comment Mpilo chief executive officer Lawrence Mantiziba said he was not aware of the situation at the paediatric section.

“I am not aware that there is a shortage of thermometers at the paediatric section,” he said.

“I will check with the pharmacists and the nurse at the hospital.”

Mpilo is the largest hospital in southern Zimbabwe and has referral patients coming from Bulawayo Metropolitan province, the Midlands, Matabeleland North, Masvingo and Matabeleland South provinces.

Mpilo Hospital recently suspended surgical operations owing to a critical shortage of oxygen kits.
