The medical outreach programme, which has become an annual event, was initially targeted at the Lemba people before it was widened to cover all tribes in the vast district.

The Lemba are believed to be descendants of the Jewish people.

Jewish Voice Ministries International president and chief executive Jonathan Bernis said they had brought medical doctors from the United States, England and Ethiopia to treat locals.

“We have a medical team from the United States, England and Ethiopia who have come here and are assisted by local health personnel to attend to various illnesses affected by the local communities,” he said.

Bernis said his ministry had brought medical supplies valued at $400 000 to attend to the marginalised people not only in Mberengwa district, but also in Gutu and Buhera during their one week-long visit.

He said the Jewish Voice planned the medical outreach throughout the year in order to reach many needy people around the world.

“As you can see our team comprising dentists, optometrists and other professionals are attending to the villagers here,” he said.

The medical clinic started with basic tests like body temperature and blood pressure before patients were attended to.

Priscilla Zimi (49) said she was grateful to the Jewish Voice for offering her free medical services.

“I had chest and eye problems, but today I am happy that I have been attended to by these doctors,” she said.

Ravengai Matanda (65) said he had eye problems that affected him for years, but received free medical attention, which he hoped would restore his eyesight.
