Kelvin Sibanda stabbed the athlete with a screwdriver on December 10 2014 following a brawl over inheritance of a wardrobe left behind by Sibanda’s father.

The court heard that Sibanda was a half-brother to Sithole as the two were born of one mother, but different fathers.

Sibanda, represented by lawyer Kucaca Phulu, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide when he appeared before Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Andrew Mutema.

Justice Mutema initially sentenced him to three years in jail, but later suspended two years on condition of good behaviour.

He said facts showed that Sithole was the aggressor as he attempted to assault Sibanda three times while he tried to avoid the assault by running away all the time.

Mutema said Sithole later caught up with Sibanda, who in self-defence stabbed him.

Sithole died while on the way to hospital.

“The court takes into consideration that you are a first offender and that you were trying to defend yourself, but you went too far with that,” Justice Mutema said.

“You were very young at the time and the deceased was an aggressor. He was persistent in his intent to assault you and you ran away two times.”

The court heard that Sibanda was 22 years old while Sitholewas 28 at the time the offence was committed.
