A MOCK fire drill at Pretoria Portland Cement (PPC) in Bulawayo yesterday sent workers scurrying for cover as they thought the plant was on fire.

The workers were sent into panic when three council fire tenders stormed the plant, about 15 km along Harare Road.

When Southern Eye arrived at the scene, visibly terrified workers were milling around the assembly point after learning that it was a mock drill.

PPC’s General Manager, Kelibone Masiyane said the aim of the drill was to test levels of preparedness in the event of a real outbreak.

“What is important with this exercise was we wanted to measure how our workers are efficient and prepared in terms of dealing with emergencies within their working departments, “he said.

Risk manager, Nathan Ncube said the mock drill was conducted in consultation with the fire brigade to establish whether their unit was also equal to the task.

“Our infrastructure is high and by so doing we learnt from them how to protect ourselves during such times while they also practised their skills of putting out fire in high rise structures,” Ncube said

“We are happy that there were no causalities during the process and even contract workers who work with us adhered to the standards of safety that we taught them.”

Council fire officer Michael Nkiwane commended the workers’ swift reaction to the alarm.
